Case Studies

Public buildings are a significant contributor to London’s carbon emissions – making up as much as 10 per cent of London’s total carbon footprint. The focus on retrofitting these buildings is therefore very important, especially given that 80 per cent of the buildings currently in use today will still be in use in 2050.

The RE:FIT programme is the cornerstone of London’s public building retrofit activity. The programme is being delivered by the Greater London Authority (GLA) and promoted by the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group (C40). It is the first project to be delivered in partnership with C40.

The Greater London Authority (GLA) is working with Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) in central London to identify and then deliver opportunities for increasing green cover. The Greening the BIDs project has supported 15 green infrastructure audits and part-funded demonstration projects with the aim of catalysing urban greening in central London. This will help deliver Mayoral objectives to increase green cover to reduce the Urban Heat Island effect and tackle local surface water flooding, while enhancing the beauty of London.

It conveys information about how London perceives its climate risk, measures key climate change-related data, and manages climate action.

London is the largest city to have adopted a central area congestion charging scheme. It has led to a 20% reduction in four-wheeled traffic within the charging zone during charging hours, cutting an estimated 40-50 million litres of vehicle fuel consumption inside the zone and a total 100,000 tons CO2 emissions annually across London. The charge raises £122 M annually which is then spent on improving transport, including providing more buses, improving road safety and implementing energy efficiency in transport. The zone was further extended in February 2007, doubling its size, with initial estimates showing a 13% reduction in traffic in the new area covered. Monitoring of this extended zone has not yet been completed.
